Elementary Book Report

An elementary book report tends to be far easier to write than when writing a book report in high school or college. The idea behind elementary book reports is to help the young student learn the basics of comprehension and to improve literacy. While some teachers will provide a list of elementary book report ideas for the students to choose from, others will provide an outline of what's required.

Typically, elementary book reports aren't nearly as long as a traditional book report because the concept isn't so much in the writing as it is in the recollection of what happened in the book. As well, it helps students to better understand how to recognize the different components of a story such as setting, characters, plot and theme.

Most elementary level books are short and easy to read so the depth of the theme won't be as complex or as developed when compared to a novel. Typically, the plot and theme are discussed prior to even reading the book so this will make it easier for the student to grasp the point of the story when writing the elementary book report.

What follows are some basic guidelines to follow when writing an elementary book report so that younger students are better prepared when sitting down to write.

First, share the title of the story, the author, and the setting in the first paragraph of the elementary book report.

Second, identify how many characters are in the story and then write a short sentence to describe what the character looked like or how the character acted in the story.

Third, introduce the action or plot of the story with the following writing triggers:

- In the beginning of the story…
- The conflict of the story was…
- The conflict was solved when…
- The story ended with…

Fourth, state the theme of the story in the elementary book report and share any personal opinions about the story. There is no wrong answer when it comes to adding a personal opinion so allow the student to speak or write freely as this will often bring out his or her creativity.
